Feeling Empty

I have heard people say and I have even said before, “I feel so empty.” Someone may have accumulated a pretty good life by any measure of today’s standards. They have a decent job, they have a good house, a nice car, a family, and maybe a hobby they enjoy. They go through a normal life every day and have no reason to really be unhappy. But, for some reason, they are just not satisfied. They feel this emptiness, this edginess, that just makes them wonder why they don’t feel more full from all the things they should be enjoying.

There is a reason I would dare say the majority of our society has this gnawing empty feeling inside despite obtaining most of what we are told we need to be happy. It’s found in Matthew 5:6 –

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.

Until we hunger and thirst for righteousness as much as we do our next meal, we will never truly feel full. We will always have this sense that something is missing and have a restlessness that we can’t explain. When we hunger and thirst for righteousness, we are full of peace, joy, and life in a way most others around us are not experiencing – even despite our circumstances.

Righteousness is right standing with God. This comes through believing in the sacrifice that Jesus made when He shed His blood for us. It’s believing in Him so much that we follow Him and live for Him. We follow the path He has laid out for us in His Word. God’s purpose for us is to bring us life and peace so why would we ever turn away from that to pursue empty, unfulfilling gains?

Malachi 2:5-6

“The purpose of my covenant with the Levites was to bring life and peace, and that is what I gave them. This required reverence from them, and they greatly revered me and stood in awe of my name.

They passed on to the people the truth of the instructions they received from me. They did not lie or cheat; they walked with me, living good and righteous lives, and they turned many from lives of sin.”

This is absolutely beautiful. As we revere the Lord and honor His name, the Lord in turn gives us life and peace. As we walk in the Lord’s righteousness, we don’t lie or cheat. We walk with our head held high with no shame and we are full!

Another way to explain feeling full inside is to feel satisfied.

Psalm 63:5

You satisfy me more than the richest feast. I will praise you with songs of joy.

When we understand that the Lord is our satisfaction, we begin to seek Him out more than any other thing on this earth. We then finally experience joy and the full life we have been looking for all along.

Father God, You are my satisfaction. If I want a blessed, full life, I know that I need to thirst and hunger for You more than any other desire I have. You have shown me a good way to live in Your Word and when I choose to follow that, You are able to give me life and peace. I do desire You and I want to make You my number one priority. I want to live for You and go after You every single day. Thank You for filling me up as I do this!
