How Big is He?

I am a visual person, I guess you would say. When I am learning, or reading, I visualize what I am learning about and then it really sticks with me. When I worship or pray I often visualize the Lord before me. It helps me really focus all of my attention on Him and helps me interact with Him in a personal way. Sometimes I visualize Jesus and sometimes I visualize the spirit of God on a majestic, heavenly throne. I would say the image of God on the throne that I picture in my mind is about 3 stories high. I guess that is big in my mind. As I have been reading through the Bible, though, I have seen glimpses of just how big God is and it is more than my human mind can envision.

2 Chronicles 16:9

The eyes of the Lord search the whole earth in order to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

My Lord has eyes. He is so big that His eyes are able to look throughout the entire earth and examine each heart until He finds those that are fully committed to Him.

In Job 38, we see the Lord tell us that He:

  • Determined the dimensions of the earth, He supported its foundations, and gave the seas their boundaries.

  • He can command the morning to appear and cause the dawn to rise.

  • He made daylight and caused it to spread to the ends of the earth.

  • He knows exactly where the gates of death are and has seen their gloom.

  • He created storehouses for hail and is reserving them for a time of battle.

  • He created the torrents of rain, and laid paths for lightening.

  • He directs the movement of the stars and the sequences of the seasons.

  • He shouts to the clouds to make them rain and commands lightening where to strike.

  • He gives intuition to our hearts and instincts to our minds.

In Job 41, the Lord asks, “Who has given me anything that I need to pay back? Everything under heaven is mine.”

My God is the ultimate Creator, Instructor, and Authority:

Psalm 94:9,10

He Who planted the ear, shall He not hear? He Who formed the eye, shall He not see? He Who disciplines and instructs the nations, shall He not punish, He Who teaches man knowledge?

My God commands the storms:

Psalm 107:29

He hushes the storm to a calm and to a gentle whisper, so that the waves of the sea are still.

My God is the only God:

Isaiah 43:10,11,13

You have been chosen to know me, believe in me, and understand that I alone am God. There is no other God— there never has been, and there never will be.

I, yes I, am the Lord, and there is no other Savior.

“From eternity to eternity I am God. No one can snatch anyone out of my hand. No one can undo what I have done.”

My God is everywhere:

Jeremiah 23:23,24

Am I a God who is only close at hand?” says the Lord. “No, I am far away at the same time. Can anyone hide from me in a secret place? Am I not everywhere in all the heavens and earth?” says the Lord.

Everything exists because of my God, through my God, and for my God:

Colossians 1:16

For it was in Him that all things were created, in heaven and on earth, things seen and things unseen, whether thrones, dominions, rulers, or authorities; all things were created and exist through Him and in and for Him.

And this verse, above many others, helps me really visualize just how big my God is:

Isaiah 40:12

Who has measured the waters in the hollow of his hand? Who has measured off the heavens with his fingers? Who has enclosed the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales and the hills in a balance?

  • He measured all the waters of the earth (the lakes, rivers, seas, and oceans) in the hollow of His hand!!

  • He marked off the heavens with His fingers!! Think of how big the heavens are and imagine Him being able to measure them with His fingers!

  • Imagine scooping a cup of sugar to measure for a recipe. Now, realize that God can do this with the dust collected from the earth!

  • We have all seen a balance that measures the weight of gold, etc. God is so big that He could put the mountains on a scale to weigh them!

Sometimes we minimize God into this distant person that should get a little of our attention. I’m sorry, but He is no little person. He is far beyond anything we have even begun to imagine. That is why Jesus coming was so important. So that we could understand the character and heart of a God that was too big for us to ever be able to begin to understand. He is so powerful and so worthy of our praise. We know nothing compared to the knowledge that exudes from Him, and we need Him!! Nothing we are facing is too big for Him to handle when you consider Him holding the oceans in His hands!

How could we ever say that God doesn’t see or God doesn’t know?? He does see. He does know. We are nothing that we should ever begin to try and instruct Him on how things should be or should have been.

Have you been wronged? God sees that. God has been wronged, too. Far more than we could ever imagine. He deserves our praise no matter what is going on around us, and in due season He will bring forth justice. Isaiah 42:3 - He will bring justice to all who have been wronged.

We never have to be afraid to trust in God. He is big enough to be deserving of our trust. He is big enough to be deserving of our praise. He is big enough to be deserving of our uttermost devotion.

This is His message to me and this is His message to you:

Isaiah 49:23 – “Those who trust in me will never be put to shame”

Father God, You are Lord over all eternity. How often I have made You so much smaller in my mind that You really are. Everything exists because of You and through You. All that I see is here because of You and for You. Please help me get my selfish mind off of myself and my wants and choose to join with You to be a part of something so much bigger than I could ever experience on my own. Nothing I am facing is bigger than You. I lift You up above all my problems and fears. You are greater than all that I am experiencing at this moment. I let go of the wrongs done to me. You will bring forth justice in my life and I will never have to be put to shame when I trust in You. Thank You that even though You are so big, You still love me and care enough to step into my life when I need You the most. I love You and I am so thankful for You!
